Tampere makes its debut on the global list of cycling cities
The world’s cycling cities are assessed every few years using the Copenhagenize Index. Tampere was included in the evaluation for the first time and ranked 45th. Established in 2011, the index measures the bike-friendliness of major cities with over 250,000 residents based on 13 indicators, such as cycling routes, bike parking, traffic arrangements, and safety.
The index is an internationally recognized benchmark that helps cities identify strengths and areas for improvement in promoting cycling.
– Although Tampere has not set a specific target for its ranking in the index, the result shows that the city is on the right track in developing cycling. Work will continue with determination to make cycling even safer and more attractive for all residents, says Traffic engineer Timo Seimelä.
The three highest-ranked cities were Utrecht, Copenhagen, and Ghent. Among Finnish major cities, only Tampere and Helsinki were included in the evaluation, with Helsinki placing 6th in the comparison.
