One of the goals of the Tampere Welcoming City development program is to promote the integration of international residents into local communities. Already one in ten Tampere residents has roots abroad.
– Many international residents in Tampere are looking to join communities where they can pursue hobbies and meet new people, says Ilaria Tucci, Project planner for Welcoming City. She continues:
– There may be various reasons why the threshold to participate in association activities feels high. Some may not yet feel confident in their Finnish language skills, while others may feel uncertain about whether they are truly welcome – perhaps due to their different backgrounds.
In September, the Tampere Welcoming City program held two info sessions for local associations, offering insights into how to make activities more accessible to the city’s international residents.
– These sessions attracted a wide range of associations, from cultural organizations to sports clubs. The topic sparked lively discussion, as many shared similar challenges, says Tucci.
Participants praised the sessions for their warm and inspiring atmosphere, thought-provoking content, and practical tips.
– I got practical ideas to develop my work and volunteer work, and also a better bigger picture about intercultural relations in society, summarized one attendee.
Ten more info sessions in November
Ten more info sessions with the same content will be held in November. All representatives of Tampere-based associations are welcome to attend.
The sessions will be facilitated by Ilaria Tucci. Presentations will be primarily in English, but questions and discussion in Finnish are welcome.
