Target planned for upper secondary schools in Tampere: 900 additional student places by 2029

On 7 June 2023, the Committee for Competence and Economic Development decided to approve the use of the City of Tampere's general upper secondary school network survey as the basis for further preparation.

In the coming years, the number of general upper secondary school students in Tampere is expected to grow rapidly. A goal has been set to increase the maximum intake of the upper secondary schools in Tampere by approximately 900 students by the year 2029. The estimate is based on the region’s demographic development and the planned population projection laid down in the city’s strategy.

A total of 90 new student places in general upper secondary education will already be made available in autumn 2024.

- General upper secondary education in Tampere is very popular. At the same time, we have an acute need for new student places in general upper secondary education, says Ilkka Sasi, Deputy Mayor and chairman of the Committee for Competence and Economic Development.

Additional facilities are being prepared at Pyynikintie

Hatanpää Upper Secondary School will move to renovated facilities at Pyynikintie 2 when they become available in summer 2025. The move will enable the school to increase its maximum intake by 350 additional students.

The Committee decided that the name of Hatanpää Upper Secondary School will be changed to Pyynikki General Upper Secondary School on 1 August 2025. Before the move, the property at Pyynikintie 2 will serve as temporary premises for the nearby Tampereen lyseon lukio High School, which will be under renovation.

Negotiations continue for additional facilities at Hakametsä Sport Campus

The Committee also decided to continue negotiations on the renting of facilities for upper secondary education from Hakametsä Sport Campus. The aim is to acquire new facilities for an additional 550 general upper secondary school students. The new facilities would administratively be part of Sampo Upper Secondary School.

According to the plan, the new facilities would be located in the area’s new hybrid block. The hybrid block also includes other educational services, sports and exercise facilities, a national training centre and office facilities.

English-language line launches at Pyynikki General Upper Secondary School in 2025

The Committee also decided to launch an English-language general upper secondary school line in Pyynikki General Upper Secondary School on 1 August 2025.

The line will benefit students who don’t have sufficient language skills in Finnish or Swedish at the beginning of their general upper secondary studies. The line also provides an opportunity to continue studies in English in general upper secondary education, for those students who have completed their basic education in English.
