An English-language general upper secondary school line will begin in Tampere, in autumn 2025

The line will benefit, for example, young people who have completed their basic education or similar studies in languages other than Finnish. The line also provides an opportunity to continue studies in English in general upper secondary education, for those students who have completed their basic education in English.

- There is a demand for more English-language general upper secondary education, says Ilkka Sasi, the chairman of the committee and the new Deputy Mayor.

During 2023 and 2024, a curriculum will be drawn up for the line, personnel will be trained and recruited, and the criteria for admission will be prepared. Also, the necessary number of available student places is determined. The line becomes a separate study programme available for application.

The location of Pyynikki General Upper Secondary School in the vicinity of the English-language IB Upper Secondary School brings benefits to, among other things, teaching arrangements, as the city's English-language school path focuses on the Pyynikki area. The Finnish International School of Tampere, FISTA, is also located in the area. 

The new English general upper secondary school is studying the same curriculum as in Finnish-language general upper secondary school, and the final degree is a Finnish matriculation examination. The IB Upper Secondary School studies, on the other hand, have an international final IB degree and their own curriculum.

Pyynikki General Upper Secondary School will start its operations in the property currently being renovated at Pyynikintie 2, on 1 August 2025, when Hatanpää General Upper Secondary School will move to the premises in August 2025. According to the committee's decision, the name of Hatanpää General Upper Secondary School will change to Pyynikki General Upper Secondary School, on 1 August 2025.
