Tell us briefly about your research topics and international work

My research focuses on a few distinct but interrelated subjects: Electronics for embedded systems, hardware implementations for digital communications, and positioning techniques including satellite navigation receiver architectures. I have been active in coordinating and participating in EU-funded doctoral training networks within these areas, and worked in European collaboration projects developing GALILEO positioning receivers. I have also chaired over 30 international conferences, majority of them in Tampere.

Based on your vast experience, what makes Tampere an especially good location for international conferences?

Tampere is a compact city where everything is at walking distance and the nature is near even within the city area. There are also good facilities for conference organization, Tampere Hall of course but also the hotels have good facilities for smaller conferences. The city is very supportive towards conferences, there is Visit Tampere to help in bidding and preparing for organization and the city often provides a complimentary reception for the conference attendees. Also reachability of Tampere is better than often expected!

How would you describe Tampere as a city? What makes it special?

Tampere is a “small big city”, very vibrant and at the same time peaceful and laid-back. The city is a good place to live, work, study and visit. World-class university, theaters, concert venues, sports facilities. The most wanted city in the happiest country in the world, as well as the best national ice hockey teams of the World Champion country. What more can you expect?
