City of Tampere collects generators for Kyiv as part of Generators of Hope drive

The City of Tampere is organising a collection drive for electric generators to help its twinned city Kyiv. The donated devices may be used, but they should be in working order. The collection period is 6-28 February.

All companies and communities operating in the Pirkanmaa region as well as individuals are invited to join the effort. The Tampere Chamber of Commerce and the entrepreneurs’ association Pirkanmaan Yrittäjät along with its member companies are taking part in the campaign.

- Tampere and its residents have supported our twin city Kyiv in many ways over the past year and we will continue to do so. Now we are taking part in a joint EU campaign. It would be great if as many as possible were to join in the effort to help the Ukrainians, because working together maximises our impact, says Anna-Kaisa Ikonen.

If you wish to donate to the Tampere campaign, please get in touch with Satu Vuorinen, Head of International Affairs for the City of Tampere, the contact person for the generator drive.

Basic information is needed for each device that is donated, including the dimensions, weight, and if the generator is new or used.

The contact person will supply more detailed information on when and where the donation should be delivered. The city cannot make arrange for picking up the devices. Tampereen Infra, the company responsible for city infrastructure, will test the used devices to make sure that they are in working order.

- When the collection period is over, the devices will be listed. We will send the list to the coordination unit of the Ministry of the Interior, which will apply for approval for the goods by the Ukrainian administration. Once approved, the goods will be delivered to Ukraine through the EU’s Civil Protection Mechanism, says Satu Vuorinen.

The names of the donors will be published on the City of Tampere website once the collection period is over.

Generators of Hope is a campaign launched by Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, and Dario Nardella, President of the Eurocities network. The aim of the campaign is to deliver electric generators to Ukraine.  Metsola has called on all cities and municipalities to take part in the campaign.

At the EU level it has been agreed that the EU’s Civil Protection Mechanism will be responsible for the transport costs and logistics related to the donated goods. In Finland, the Ministry of the Interior will coordinate the effort.

Kyiv has been twinned with Tampere since 1954, The City of Tampere has supported Ukraine during Russia's war of aggression in many ways. When the war began the Tampere City Board immediately decided to donate money and goods worth € 150,000 to Ukraine, and in the summer of 2022 Tampere helped arrange a summer camp for children from Kyiv. Tampere has also donated buses to Ukraine that have been taken out of service by Tampere City Transport. The buses took aid supplies acquired by the city and collected by volunteers to Ukraine. Symbolic support has been also shown, for example, by illuminating Tammerkoski Rapids with the colours of the Ukrainian flag.
