The new periodicals and newspaper reading room will open on the first floor of the main library Metso on Friday 14 October at 10 a.m. The new reading room will contain all the newspapers and periodicals that are currently available in the old reading room, the Olotila room and the music department.

In future, all the newspapers, periodicals and magazines, along with electronic services, will be conveniently available in one place. The reading room collection contains more than 700 titles: almost 650 periodicals and around 90 newspapers. About one-fourth of these are international publications. Magazines for children and young people will remain on the ground floor.

The services available in the reading room will become more and more varied later this autumn. The room will have computers and tablets, which customers can use, for example, for reading e-magazines, along with a copy machine and a microfilm scanner.

– The new reading room offers not only good reads in many different formats, but also an amazing setting right beneath the Metso dome. The first floor of Metso will become a diverse service hub that will house the reading room, the café and all our music-related activities combined, says Jarkko Rikkilä, Service Manager responsible for music and periodicals at Metso.

Services on the first floor

In addition to the periodicals reading room, the first floor of the main library Metso is home to the music department and café. These services are connected with each other: the same personnel manage the music department and the reading room, and customers can drink coffee in the reading room or read magazines in the café.

The airy reading room is designed for many different purposes. It is furnished with cosy and colourful armchairs and rocking chairs, standing desks, as well as traditional tables for reading, for instance, broadsheet papers. There are lower desks for customers working with tablets and laptops.

The reading room is open during the opening hours of the main library. In winter, the library is open from Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
