Sustainable development

Sustainable development is a globally, regionally and locally driven change in society that aims to secure the conditions for a good life for present and future generations.

The role of cities as local promoters and global influencers of sustainable development is significant. That is why Tampere is also committed to development that takes ecological, social, cultural and economic aspects into account. Sustainable development is taken into account in Tampere's operations and decision-making, and it is a cross-cutting theme in the city's strategy and management. Achieving sustainable development requires the contribution of the entire urban community.

The 2030 Agenda in Tampere

The UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development aims to eradicate extreme poverty and secure well-being in an environmentally sustainable manner. The Agenda comprises 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), which all countries should reach together by 2030.

The ongoing decade of action will determine whether the world will achieve the sustainable development goals set out in the UN 2030 Agenda. The objectives of the action plan have also indicated the preparation of Tampere's new City of Things strategy.

The Tampere City Group will promote the goals of the 2030 Agenda as a whole through a strategic management system. The City of Tampere is transparent in its evaluation, reporting and communication with regard to actions taken for a more sustainable future.

City of Sustainable Action - The Voluntary Local Review of the UN Sustainable Development Goals in Tampere 2022

The Voluntary Local Review (VLR) is an assessment of the city's performance against the UN's 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The first local assessment in Tampere, completed in May 2022, presents each of the 17 sustainable development goals from a global, national and local perspective. The Tampere-related perspectives related to the goals are highlighted as both themes and case examples. In addition, monitoring indicators suitable for assessing the objectives are highlighted.

The preparation of the local review is part of a credible and transparent SDG work. It is desired that the local evaluation will serve as material and an initiative for discussion in the further work of the 2030 Agenda goals in Tampere. By submitting the local review to the UN, Tampere will also become a stronger part of the international network of responsible leader cities.
