Sustainable development
Sustainable development is a globally, regionally and locally driven change in society that aims to secure the conditions for a good life for present and future generations.
The role of cities as local promoters and global influencers of sustainable development is significant. That is why Tampere is also committed to development that takes ecological, social, cultural and economic aspects into account. Sustainable development is taken into account in Tampere's operations and decision-making, and it is a cross-cutting theme in the city's strategy and management. Achieving sustainable development requires the contribution of the entire urban community.
The 2030 Agenda in Tampere
The UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development aims to eradicate extreme poverty and secure well-being in an environmentally sustainable manner. The Agenda comprises 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), which all countries should reach together by 2030.
The ongoing decade of action will determine whether the world will achieve the sustainable development goals set out in the UN 2030 Agenda. The objectives of the action plan have also indicated the preparation of Tampere's new City of Action strategy.
The Tampere City Group will promote the goals of the 2030 Agenda as a whole through a strategic management system. The City of Tampere is transparent in its evaluation, reporting and communication with regard to actions taken for a more sustainable future.
The Voluntary Local Reviews of the UN Sustainable Development Goals in Tampere
The Voluntary Local Review (VLR) is an assessment of the city's performance against the UN's 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Tampere published its first VLR in May 2022.
Tampere's second SDG review, to be completed in late May 2025, will examine progress on sustainable development over the council period through each of the 17 SDGs of the 2030 Agenda. The numerical assessment is based on the monitoring indicators already in use in Tampere. It also highlights the processes, plans and programmes that drive the targets forward in the City of Tampere. The final evaluation report will be published on this page.
The Voluntary Local Reviews have become a predominant way to tell of cities' commitment to the 2030 Agenda. More than 200 cities have produced one or more VLRs to date.
