Children’s swimming lessons

• Swimming school instruction is in Finnish. 
• The lesson lasts for 30 minutes and includes ten swims.

Introduction to swimming skills (Varhaistaitoryhmä)

The group is recommended for children who have turned 6 and are timid in water or cannot swim and who avoid submerging their heads in water. In the group, we get used to the water with the help of games and practice the basics of swimming for beginners. The group's goal is to complete the early skills badge. The course takes place in the children's pool.

Fundamental swimming skills (Alkeisryhmä)

The group is recommended for children around 6 years old who do not know how to swim and who can dip in the water. The goal of the group is to swim ten meters continuously on your stomach and/or back and complete the beginner's swimming badge. In addition to swimming performances, this includes various tasks related to water skills. The course is held mainly in the children's pool but also in the adult pool.

Recreational group (Harrastusryhmä)

The group is recommended for children around 7 years old who can swim ten meters on their stomach and back. The goal is to be able to swim 25 to 50 metres or complete a swimming hobby badge. Teaching takes place in the children's pool and deep water.

Swimming technique group (Tekniikkaryhmä)

The group is recommended for children over 8 years of age who can swim 25 meters of elementary stroke and beginner's backstroke with proper techniques. The goal is to complete the swimming technique badge. Teaching takes place in the large pool.

Swimming instruction is organised for pupils in the lower grades of basic education in cooperation with schools. Swimming instruction is an integral part of physical education in schools: children become used to water, and all schoolchildren get at least basic instruction in swimming. As part of the instruction, children are taught about the dangers associated with water, and they learn basic life-saving skills.

The fundamental skills group for young people (Nuorten alkeisryhmä) is intended for children aged from 9 to 12 who cannot swim (who can swim less than 5 metres), and who are timid about getting wet and moving around in water. The aim is to swim a distance of 10 metres on the front and the back.

The improvers’ group is for young people (Nuorten jatkoryhmä) aged from 9 to 12 who can swim 10 metres on their front and back. The aim is to obtain a badge for 25 to 50 metres’ distance swimming. Some of the instruction takes place in deep water.

Basic course JLS - Junior Lifesaver I 

For girls and boys aged 10 to 15 with swimming skills (at least 100 metres). The group practices rescuing oneself and rescuing another. The training program includes, for example, the use of rescue equipment, swimming in clothes and diving.

Course II

For those who have completed the basic course. Among other things, the participants improve the life-saving skills they have learned at the first level, practice emergency first aid skills, train with a mask and flippers, and take level II life-saving and swimming tests. Overall, the course is about fun activities in water, improving your swimming skills and getting fitter while completing challenging and exciting tasks.

Course III

For those who have completed course II. The course offers the participants tough problems and fast action and teaches them to anticipate and recognize problems. They learn first aid skills that can also be used out of water and acknowledge the limits of their abilities. In addition to life-saving exercises, the course aims for good swimming skills and endurance.
