Mayor model

The Mayor of Tampere is a full-time elected official. Tampere is the first municipality in Finland to have an elected mayor.

Duties of the Mayor

The Mayor acts as Mayor and Chairman of the City Board and presides over the proceedings of the City Board meetings. He or she defines the guidelines for the preparation of matters to be presented to the City Board and, under the authority of the City Board, manages the city's operations, administration and finances.

How the Mayor is elected

The Mayor is elected by the City Council from among the full members of the City Council.

The Mayor's term of office is the same four years as that of the City Council. The Mayor may be re-elected and there is no limit on the number of terms.
