The Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra is the city’s most international work community

Nearly a third of the over 100 orchestra members come from abroad. More than 10 different nationalities are represented in the Philharmonic Orchestra. New orchestra members are selected with audition rounds, some of them carried out anonymously only based on sound.

“I came here in 2021 to study at the Sibelius Academy. After my first year of studies, at the recommendation of teachers and friends, I auditioned for the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra and was selected. It is amazing to get to play for full halls from one week to another- I feel like the locals really appreciate our work.”

Johannes Põlda on is the concertmaster of the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra.

“I came here as a substitute to the orchestra’s concertmaster last autumn for five weeks. During that time, I fell in love with both the fantastic orchestra as well as the pleasant and child-friendly city. Once there was an opening for the concertmaster, I signed up for the audition and here I am! My family also moved here.”
