SONIC-project
The SONIC project strengthens the competitiveness of music industry SMEs in Europe
Tampere is part of the EU’s SONIC project, which supports the competitiveness of music industry SMEs by developing policies that foster innovation and skills in Europe. SONIC aims to create an innovation-friendly environment that enhances the competitiveness of SMEs in the music sector. The project’s goal is to support the music industry amid digital transformation and the rise of artificial intelligence, ensuring that music SMEs keep pace with these developments.
The project strengthens skills, workforce, and the use of AI through co-creation and international collaboration. The aim is to build a vibrant, sustainable, and innovative music ecosystem that supports both economic growth and cultural diversity.
Tampere as a Music City
Tampere is the home of Manserock and is well-known as a city of culture, music, and tourism, from which many notable artists and music industry companies have emerged.
Music x Media, the world’s third-oldest professional music industry event, has been held in Tampere for 30 years, bringing nearly a thousand guests from record publishing, live music, distribution, production, and media sectors to the city.
Tampere also has Finland’s most active community of music clubs. This is reflected in the fact that more Teosto royalties are collected here than anywhere else in the country. Each year, dozens of music festivals are organized in Tampere, and relative to its population, the city hosts the highest number of live concerts in Finland.
The Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra is the northern crown jewel of classical music, while at the other end of the spectrum, the city’s stunningly wide and high-quality underground scene produces unique gems ranging from extreme metal to electronic music.
