Who in the music industry should receive a star on the Walk of Fame Finland?
The Walk of Fame Finland located on Åkerlundinkatu street, Tampere, is a tribute following Hollywood’s example: the first national and international Walk of Fame in Finland paying homage to music, artists, musicians, and music industry influencers. Now the time has come to propose the 2023 Walk of Fame Finland star recipients.
The Walk of Fame was established in Tampere in 2019 and new stars are added every year. At the moment, there are 23 music industry stars immortalised on the Walk. 5–8 new Walk of Fame stars are added annually based on proposals received from the public.
Now it is again possible to have a say in who music industry star you would like to see immortalised on a Walk of Fame plaque. Proposals for names to be memorialised in star plaques can be submitted using an online form until 14 May 2023.
Based on the public’s proposals, earlier years have seen Walk of Fame stars awarded to Jean Sibelius, Kaija Saariaho, Juice Leskinen, Popeda, Cheek, Katri Helena, Epe Helenius, Tapio Korjus, Eppu Normaali, Nightwish, Karita Mattila, Ismo Alanko, Paula Koivuniemi, Mikko Alatalo, Yö, Värttinä, Kaija Koo, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Jaakko Kuusisto, Hanoi Rocks, Erja Lyytinen, Heikki Salo, and Marion Rung.
The stars on the Walk of fame form a diverse representation of different sectors and genres. Diversity, nationwide importance and equality, for example from the perspective of gender and age, are taken into consideration when selecting the star recipients. The musical heritage of Tampere also plays a key role in the selection.
The public can propose any person or entity that was or is a part of the industry: artists, bands, music or lyrics writers, composers and music producers, as well as representatives of organisations or institutions.
Based on the suggestions from the public, the board of the Music x Media makes reasoned proposals on the star recipients. The board consists of experienced music industry professionals. The final decision on the stars nominated by the public is made by the City of Tampere’s Culture and Leisure Committee. In the traditional manner, the recipients of the 2023 stars will be announced as part of the Tampere Day programme in autumn 2023.
The Tampere Walk of Fame is located on the section of Åkerlundinkatu from Tampere Hall to the Tulli area. The Walk of Fame Finland is a cooperation between the City of Tampere, the Tampere Hall and the professional music industry event Music x Media.
