Be a promoter of sharing: by renting and borrowing, we reduce climate emissions
Have you used Tampere's city bikes or the libraries' hobby or games rooms? Borrowed a tent for a friend for a summer trip or rented someone else's car from a peer-to-peer rental platform? If you answered yes to any of the above, you are a promoter of sharing economy.
Sharing means borrowing, renting and co-owning instead of buying your own. Sharing and the sharing economy are a way to reduce climate emissions from consumption. Reducing the purchase of goods also has an impact on the nature footprint of Finns.
The City of Tampere invites citizens, communities and businesses to promote the sharing of goods and vehicles in Tampere as part of the Yhteiskäytön edistäjät campaign.
– We want to encourage people to consider renting and borrowing as an alternative to buying goods. Sharing is not limited to services provided by private or public operators, such as car rental or library services. Borrowing between family or friends or sharing equipment in a housing company are also important examples of sharing, says Tiina Leinonen from the City of Tampere.
Is your association or company a promoter of sharing? Make use of campaign materials
Communities ranging from residents' associations and sports clubs to local businesses provide a huge range of borrowing and rental opportunities for city residents.
The city's campaign is open to all associations, businesses and other organisations that offer the possibilities for borrowing and renting of goods, equipment, vehicles and similar items for the residents of Tampere.
Sign up and receive a campaign material pack. The materials will allow different actors to promote the rental and lending opportunities they offer as part of the city's campaign through their online channels or on their premises.
The sharing economy campaign will run until the end of October 2025. Materials can be used throughout the campaign.
Goods and services make up a large part of the carbon footprint of Tampere residents
The campaign is part of the city's Carbon Neutral Actions development programme. The promotion of the sharing economy and shared use is based on the City of Tampere's goal to be carbon neutral by 2030. Renting and borrowing goods instead of buying them is an effective way to reduce climate emissions.
– Our consumption choices have a particular impact on emissions and the environment in other countries. In May, Tampere published fresh data on the emissions of consumption, the carbon footprint of residents of Tampere. Most of this comes from the consumption of goods and services and from dietary choices, Leinonen says.
In the the sharing economy experiment of the Carbon Neutral Actions development programme, City of Tampere has brought new sharing services to neighbourhoods. In Epilä and Vuores it is possible to rent out shared-use cargo bikes. In Tesoma, Linnainmaa and Vuores, it is possible to rent household goods from self-service lockers.
