Construction projects for early childhood education and care centres and schools are underway in various parts of Tampere. In Hervanta, the new school building constructed on the site of the old Ahvenisjärvi School opened in August 2026. The new school building is designed to accommodate approximately 1 100 students, including students receiving pre-primary education and students in grades 1–9. Operations at the Ahvenisjärvi school building have been temporarily relocated to the Konetalo building on the University of Tampere’s Hervanta campus for the duration of construction.
The new school features a large gymnasium and a smaller multipurpose hall, which are used during the day for basic education and early childhood education and care. At other times, the facilities may be used by local residents or other organizations.
The renovation of the Ruusutarha early childhood education and care centre (formerly Hatanpää’s Jukola) has been completed. The building, which was renovated for hospital use in 1917, will provide a total of 140 spots for seven groups of early childhood education and care. An early childhood education and care centre will initially serve as a temporary facility for the Koivistonkylä daycare center, as a new early childhood education and care centre is being built to replace the current Koivistonkylä building.
A new school and an early childhood education and care centre are being built to replace the Kanjoni School. During the renovation, students will be temporarily relocated to Konetalo on the Hervanta campus and to the new Ahvenisjärvi School. The current Kanjoni early childhood education and care centre, meanwhile, will remain in use until the new building is completed. Also in the Hervanta area, the private service-voucher early childhood education and care centre Sunshine Hervantajärvi opens its doors in August 2026.
The Turtola early childhood education and care centre moved to temporary facilities on Sairaalankatu at the beginning of August 2025, and the new building will open in August 2027. The old Turtola early childhood education and care centre will be demolished, and a new 80-child early childhood education and care centre will be built in its place.
The renovation of the three school buildings at the Aleksanteri School is expected to be completed in August 2027. During the renovation, the Eteläpuisto early childhood education and care centre and school facilities, as well as temporary facilities designed for basic education at Pyynikintie 2, will be used as temporary locations. The Aleksanteri School houses grades 1–6 of basic education as well as early childhood education and care preschool groups, for a total of approximately 550 students.
The buildings currently part of the Wivi Lönn School are undergoing technical upgrades, and the interiors are being modernized to meet the requirements of a contemporary school environment while respecting the buildings’ long history. Barrier-free access is also being improved. The school buildings undergoing renovation were completed in 1875, 1886, and 1904.
The renovation of the three school buildings at the Harju School began in the summer of 2025. Some of the students at the Harju School, which is part of the Rahola School, will be temporarily relocated to a makeshift facility to be set up on the school grounds during the construction work. The buildings will be renovated into modern school facilities, and the work will comply with historic preservation requirements. The facilities are designed to accommodate approximately 285 students (pre-primary education and grades 1–6).
