We asked, you gave us ideas: the “superbus” became the “plusbus”
The new service concept, which had been operating under the working title “superbus”, utilizes methods familiar from the tram system: electric buses run frequently, passengers can board through any door, and the travel experience is smooth from start to finish.
We hoped the name suggestions would reflect the service’s unique features. In two weeks, we received an amazing 5,500 ideas, about half of which were different names. A warm thank you to all participants!
The name is accurate and works well in communications
The service’s name was decided by a panel consisting of representatives from Nysse and the marketing agency i2. The panel emphasized relevance and the fact that the name works in communication without needing further explanation. The name selected was “plusbus”, which appeared in several suggestions in slightly different forms.
Many proposals included “Nysse” (e.g., “super-nysse”), but the panel did not select these for further consideration. Although “nysse” means “bus” to many local residents, it is the name of the entire regional public transportation service. Nysse buses, trams, and regional trains all use the same Nysse tickets.
“Plusbus” captures the essence of the service well: it offers a little more than a standard bus service—but not quite all the features associated with super buses, such as separate traffic lanes. The name is clear, playful, and versatile, and it translates easily into other languages.
The first plusbuses will begin operating in 2028 on the following routes
- 7 Käräjätörmä–Tesoma–Kalkku–Keskusta–Hakametsä–Linnainmaa
- 8 Haukiluoma–Tesoma–Keskusta–Kaukajärvi–Annala, Kaipanen.
Perhaps in the future, you’ll hear someone at the bus stop say, “Here comes the plus!”
