Art from the Old City Hall featured in the Tampere Art Museum’s Encore! exhibition

Works previously displayed at the Old City Hall have been selected to the Tampere Art Museum’s exhibition Encore! – Classics and contemporary art from the collections. The Old City Hall now features a new installation curated by the Tampere Art Museum, presenting works by women artists from the City of Tampere’s collection. The works included in the installation are relatively recent acquisitions to the collection.

Works from Old City Hall have been selected for the Tampere Art Museum’s exhibition Encore! – Classics and contemporary art from the collections. The museum’s spring collection exhibition presents works from the collections of the Tampere Art Museum and the City of Tampere by nearly 90 artists, spanning from the 1810s to the 2020s, from Hjalmar Munsterhjelm to Kim Simonsson. The exhibition brings together classics of art history and recent contemporary acquisitions, creating dialogues between different periods. Encore! will be on view at the Tampere Art Museum from 7 February to 14 June 2026. After the exhibition, the museum will close for approximately four years for extensive renovation and new construction, during which exhibitions will be held in temporary venues.

The replacement installation at City Hall consists of works by women artists from the City of Tampere’s collection. Contemporary artworks have been brought into the official reception rooms, where they engage in an intriguing dialogue with the permanently displayed works, the Neo-Renaissance architecture, and the antique furniture and objects. The exhibition includes paintings, graphic art, and photographs depicting portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. The selection features both recent acquisitions and works that have previously been seen by only a limited audience. The replacement installation highlights the diversity and high quality of the city’s collection.

The City of Tampere’s art collection comprises more than 7,000 works created using various techniques over a period of more than one hundred years. Visual art acquired for the benefit of all residents is displayed in city-owned premises such as schools and health centres. Public display of the collection promotes equal access to visual art. As a memory organisation and regional responsibility museum, the Tampere Art Museum’s collection activities aim to preserve the visual cultural heritage of the Pirkanmaa region. The Tampere Art Museum is responsible for the placement of the city’s collection in municipal facilities.
