Official communications go digital: activate Suomi.fi messages

Starting in early 2026, official correspondence will primarily be delivered digitally. When you log in to Tampere City’s or any other authority’s online service next year, a Suomi.fi Messages mailbox will be automatically created for you. This service replaces paper mail from public authorities. You can enable Suomi.fi Messages today.

From the beginning of next year, Suomi.fi Messages will be available to all adults who interact electronically with public authorities. The mailbox is created when you authenticate strongly in any public administration e-service, such as those provided by municipalities, state authorities, or wellbeing services counties.

Tampere City already uses Suomi.fi Messages for case management, e-services, and early childhood education. The service is also in use at Pirkanmaa Waste Management.

Suomi.fi Messages replaces paper mail from authorities: the same message will no longer arrive later as a letter at home. You can read messages via the Suomi.fi mobile app or by logging in to the Suomi.fi web service and navigating to “Messages.”

Activate Suomi.fi messages now

More than two million people already use Suomi.fi Messages. Activation is recommended as early as autumn 2025 when you authenticate in an authority’s e-service.

You can start using Suomi.fi Messages immediately and read your messages at https://suomi.fi/viestit or by downloading the Suomi.fi mobile app.

The service saves time for both citizens and authorities by ensuring messages are delivered quickly and securely to the right recipient. It also reduces costs and environmental impacts associated with handling paper mail.

Participate in the webinar

In January 2026, the Digital and Population Data Services Agency will organize webinars for citizens about the upcoming transition to digital official mail. There will be two sessions in Finnish, one in Swedish, and one in English.
The webinars will cover the key aspects of the change.

A participation link will be sent to registered attendees closer to the event. The webinar will be recorded, and a link to the recording will be provided to participants.

English-language webinar will be on January 15, 2026, at 10 am. Register for a webinar.

Who is affected by the change?

The change applies to:

  • Adults who interact electronically with public authorities and have not previously enabled Suomi.fi Messages.
  • If you act on behalf of a company, organization, or another person, Suomi.fi Messages will apply only to you—not to the person, company, or organization you represent.

The change does not apply to:

  • You, if you do not use public administration e-services with strong authentication. In that case, you will continue to receive paper mail.
  • Minors.
  • Individuals under guardianship or with a valid power of attorney for guardianship.

Prefer paper mail?

You can switch back to paper mail by adjusting your Suomi.fi Messages settings or contacting the Digital and Population Data Services Agency’s customer service. The choice to receive paper mail remains valid for six months at a time.
