The Adult Education Centre of the Tampere Region is a diverse learning environment where people of all ages and life situations come to study. The principles for a safer space are jointly created guidelines that help ensure everyone – whether attending, working, or participating in events – feels accepted and welcome as they are.
– Our principles for a safer space emphasise respect for others, openness, the opportunity to learn and make mistakes, the creation of a safe learning environment, and the responsibility to address inappropriate behaviour, says Maija-Liisa Gröhn, Principal of the Adult Education Centre of the Tampere Region.
The principles are displayed in both Finnish and English at the Centre’s premises in Sampola. They are also available on the website as text and posters. In lessons, the principles can also be explored in Arabic, French, and Spanish.
Gröhn hopes the principles will be actively integrated into teaching situations and embraced by both students and teachers.
– When the principles are reviewed together with the group, they can lead to eye-opening discussions. At the same time, it becomes easier to address situations where the principles have not been fully upheld – even during the lesson. The principles can also be incorporated into teaching, for example, by exploring the different language versions, Gröhn explains.
The Centre’s harassment contact person is assistant principal Anne Partanen. You can contact the harassment contact person if you have experienced inappropriate behaviour or feel that the principles have not been followed in a particular situation. Reports can also be made by email, anonymously via an online feedback form, or on paper via the Sampola mailbox.
The principles for a safer space at the Adult Education Centre are based on the guidelines developed by the City of Tampere.
