New concept for baby swimming brings swimming groups for more children

With the reform of the baby and family swimming groups, some swimming groups have moved to eight sessions instead of the previous six-month sessions. More and more children and families are now able to join the groups, and the reform is reflected in different age groups, prices and application times.

As a result of the change, baby and family swimming groups are now offered in two eight-session periods per semester.  The reform of the groups applies to the Family swim, Kids` swim, Water beasts and Water termites groups. The change does not apply to baby swimming group for beginners and continuing baby swimming groups, which will remain full-season groups.

The eight-session swimming groups are more affordable and are available at the Tesoma and Hervanta Swimming Pools and Tampere Swimming Centre. Detailed descriptions, timetables and prices can be found on the swimming school websites.

Backed by high demand and a desire to expand

The reform is based on the perception that the six-month season is too long for most participants. On the other hand, it has also been observed that the high demand often leaves many children without a place in a group and the opportunity to take part in swimming lessons. The change now clearly offers more families with children a place in swimming groups.

Child-centred baby swimming

In child-centred baby swimming, the guidance is tailored to the baby's abilities and individual specific needs. The aim is to create a safe and positive relationship with the water for the baby and the family and to get the baby to enjoy the water.

Child-centred baby swimming also means going on the child's terms and listening to their reactions so that they are not overloaded or distressed in the water. The content of baby swimming sessions is designed according to the child's developmental level, so that the exercises are suitable for him or her and support the development of motor and social skills.

In child-centred baby swimming, parents are involved in baby swimming and learn to support and understand the baby's needs and to support the baby's movements, water skills and play activities.

The child-centred approach to baby swimming also aims to teach water safety skills - baby swimming teaches a child basic water skills and water safety skills in a safe environment.
