Self-service library rules

A self-service library is a library that you can use even if the staff is not present, for example in the evening and on weekends. Check library's website for the opening hours of the self-service libraries in Tampere.

Logging in

During self-service hours, you can access the library with your PIKI library card and PIN code. You can get a library card and PIN code from all PIKI libraries during their customer service hours. The library card and PIN code are personal.

To enter a self-service library, each customer must log in with their own library card, except for children under the age of 15 accompanied by an adult. You must ensure that other people do not enter the library when you enter or leave the library yourself. Also, it is your responsibility to make sure that the door is locked after you.
A possible loaning ban does not prevent you from logging in to the self-service library.

Services

During the self-service hours, you can borrow and return items, pick up your reserved items and use the library premises for reading, studying and working. The library’s customer computers, printer and wireless network are also available.

You are prohibited from organizing public meetings or events due to the Assembly Act (530/1999) during the self-service hours.

During self-service hours, you cannot use services that require the presence of the library staff. These services include, for example, paying fees or obtaining a library card.
If you experience problems with borrowing or returning items, you must contact the staff without undue delay to solve the issues. Until then, you are responsible for the materials registered on your library card.

Self-service library rules

The library rules apply also during self-service hours.
The library is a public space where the Public Order Act (612/2033) must be observed. The use of intoxicating substances, causing disturbance or acting in a threatening way either physically or verbally towards other customers and other harmful activities alike are prohibited in the library. Each customer is obliged to promote the cleanliness, comfort and safety of the library premises. The customer is liable for any damage caused.

Anyone over the age of 15 can register as a self-service library user. Children under the age of 15 can register as self-service library users with the consent of their guardian or another legal representative. The guardian or the legal representative is responsible for the child’s use of the self-service library.

The library premises are equipped with access control and camera surveillance systems. The access control and camera surveillance recordings constitute a personal data register as defined in the Data Protection Act (1050/2018). Any technical problems with customer computers and self-service machines can only be resolved when the library staff is present.

According to the Public Libraries Act (1492/2016), library users must behave in an appropriate manner in libraries and handle the library’s materials and other property with care. If you break the library rules or the Public Order Act, your right to use library may be suspended for a limited time period.
The end of the self-service hours are announced separately inside the library. You must leave the library premises without delay at the end of the self-service hours. Staying in the premises will trigger an alarm and the user will be charged for the costs of the alarm.

Emergency instructions, including information on emergency exit routes, are available on the library premises. Customers are required to read the instructions.

Registering as a self-service library customer

•    If you register at the library, bring your library card and a photo ID with you.
•    The library staff will ask you to familiarize yourself with the self-service library rules and sign them. By signing the rules, you accept them.
•    After accepting the self-service library rules, the staff will add your registration to the library database. After this, you will get the self-service library rules for yourself.
•    Read the emergency instructions of your library. They are available at the library.

The use of self-service libraries and children under the age of 15

Children under the age of 15 may use the self-service library independently with the consent of their guardian. To give their consent and register the child as a self-service library user, the guardian must visit the library when the staff is present or give their consent and register the child as a self-service library user online.

•    If the consent is given and the registration made at the library, we ask both the guardian and the child in question to come to the library. If this is not possible, the guardian’s presence is enough.
•    For the registration of a child under the age of 15, the child must have their library card and the guardian a photo ID with them.
•    The guardian and the child will be asked to familiarize themselves with the self-service library rules. If the child is not present, the guardian is responsible for familiarizing the child with the self-service library rules later. If the child is present, the child signs the rules and accepts them.
•    The guardian also signs the rules. The guardian has now given consent to the child to use the self-service library. The guardian and the child get the self-service library rules for themselves.
•    After accepting the self-service library rules, the staff will add the child’s registration to the library database.
•    Read the emergency instructions of your library with the child. The instructions are available at the library.

The guardian can also withdraw their consent to use the self-service library given to the child. To withdraw their consent, the guardian must visit the library during customer service times.

If the guardian withdraws their consent for the child to use the self-service library independently, the child may visit the library accompanied by an adult. The adult ensures that the child follows the library rules.

If you break the rules

If you break the rules or the law during self-service hours, your right to use the library may be suspended for a maximum of 30 days.
