The development of the city bike service sparks interest – expanding and densifying the station network are top priorities
The expansion of the city bike service to cover the entire region is currently under investigation. A total of 457 people responded to the survey, which was conducted to support the study. Most of the responses came from Tampere residents (83 percent) and 69 percent of respondents had used the current city bikes.
The survey shows that people are generally satisfied with the current service. Praise was given for the ease of use of the app, the lightness of the bikes, the functionality of the locks and the pricing. Requests for improvements relate to the station network and the overall quality of the service.
The most important areas for development were identified as increasing density and expanding the station network. Additionally, respondents wanted city bike usage rights to be included in public transport tickets. They would also be willing to pay more for a more extensive station network and electric bikes, for example. Requests for stations were evenly distributed between the Tampere and Pirkkala areas.
Studies on a regional bike-sharing service will continue throughout the rest of the year. Based on these studies, the municipalities will decide whether to participate in the competitive tendering process at the beginning of next year. The competitive tendering process will be organised in 2026, with the actual procurement decisions being made afterwards. The aim is to launch a regional city bike service in spring 2028.
The current Tampere city bike system will remain in use until autumn 2027.
