Tampere's application highlights the use of sustainable AI, the city's IoT platform (intelligent data management system), digital twins and citizen participation. In particular, the application presents the Tampere Pulssi application and the use of digital twins from the station area.
- The digital twin is a new platform for shared understanding and participation. Allowing citizens to walk through a space under construction even before it is completed creates a whole new dialogue between the city, the people and the built environment. This interaction is the human essence of the digital transition - and that is why Tampere is in the running, says Anniina Autero, Development Manager of the City of Tampere.
The competition criteria emphasise commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
- Our application shows how digital solutions can support sustainable development at city level, from reducing climate impact to inclusive planning and resource-efficient service allocation. Tampere Pulssi app helps to predict the flow of people in the city centre, supporting the development of the city's vitality and efficient and responsible decision-making by businesses. Getting to the final of the competition is a valuable opportunity to mirror our work in an international context, said Sebastian Valkama, ICT-Project Manager of the City of Tampere.
Tampere has a development programme called Data-Driven City for Citizens which aims to find digital solutions that make everyday life easier for city dwellers and businesses in the region. The Pulssi app and the digital twin for the station area are both results of the programme.
The final event of the Mobile World Capital Awards will take place on 12 June 2025 in Barcelona and the award will be linked to Mobile World Capital Barcelona, one of the world's biggest technology events.
Grand prize of €50 000 for the integration of the solution in Barcelona
The grand prize of the competition is €50,000 to scale the solution to Barcelona.
- International competitions and awards give Tampere the opportunity to take Tampere's innovations to the world, and also give us the chance to learn from others. Working in international networks and co-development is important for Tampere, says Irene Impiö, Director of Innovation and Economic Policy from the City of Tampere.
In recent years, Tampere has won the Smart City World Expo & Conference Grand Prize for innovative use of technologies, the Seoul Smart City Prize together with Nokia Arena and LG, and has been a finalist in the European Innovation Capital.
