The primary way to complete a course without attending in-person classes is to choose it from the upper secondary education online course offering. If, after reviewing options with the guidance coundelor, no other suitable alternative is available for the student's situation, the student may apply to complete the course independently using the form available in Wilma.

Completing studies via the online course offering

In the upper secondary schools of the City of Tampere, you can also complete your studies online. In the academic year 2025-2026, the online course offering includes courses and modules from nearly every subject, divided in to six different online periods. Students may choose up to two online courses or modules per period and registration is only possible through the guidance counselor .

The online course offering can be found in Wilma alongside other course offerings and the guidance counselor can provide further information about how the courses are completed. The main platforms used for online studies are Moodle and Teams, but publishers' own platforms can also be used. At the start of the course, the teacher will contact the students via Wilma and the course must be started immediately.

The offerings of Tampere's Adult Upper Secondary School are also available in Wilma and can be accessed by day school students under certain conditions. registration is done via Wilma and for distance learning courses, through the student's own guidance counselor.

Independent study

The objectives of an independently studied course are the same as those of a regulary completed course. The student prepares a study plan for the course based on the teacher's instructions, which is approved by the teacher. The plan outlines the procedures and schedule for completing the course and explains the assessment criteria. The exam for the independently studied course is taken on an agreed date, such as during the final period or on a retake exam date. It is important that the student understands their own responsibility in completing the course independently.

As a rule, only one course per subject is accepted for independent study. If a subject has only one compulsory course, it is not recommended to complete it independently. It is recommended that students complete the first course of each subject in a teaching group to become familiar with the subject's nature and working methods. School-specific and integrated courses cannot be completed throughindependent study.

If the requirements for independent study are not completed by the deadline and the course cannot be assessed, it will be marked as discontinued (K).
