Other studies creditable toward the upper secondary school syllabus

Tampere offers a wide range of opportunities to study outside your own school and to include those studies in your upper secondary school syllabus. You can study, for example, at other upper secondary schools, vocational institutions and universities. Instruction is available in-person, in hybrid formats and online.

According to the Upper Secondary Schools Act, students have the right to include studies completed elsewhere in their upper secondary school syllabus, if the goals and core content align with the national curriculum.  Crediting compulsory and national optional courses is generally straightforward, but for other studies it is advisable to confirm eligibility in advance. At Tampereen lyseon lukio the assistant principal decides on the approval and equivalence of externally completed studies.

It is important to consult the guidance counsellor and the assistant principal in advance if there is any uncertainty about whether the studies align with the curriculum.

University level studies during upper secondary school

During upper secondary school, you can take courses in university and university of applied sciences, as well as so called "gateway courses" designed specifically for secondary school students, which give you an insight into higher education in a field that interests you. Explore the offerings via the links below, but always register for courses through your own guidance counselor.

What does it cost to study outside your own upper secondary school?

Courses offered by Tampere upper secondary schools are free of charge for students. Courses included in the Summer University's secondary education cooperation agreement on secondary education are also free. However, courses outside the cooperation agreement are subject to a fee. You can check which courses are included in the agreement via the link below:

Contents of the Tampere Summer University cooperation agreement

The University of Tampere and Tampere University of Applied Sciences have defined the course offerings for secondary education institutions on their websites. These higher education courses are free for students and must be registered always through your own guidance counselor!

It is also possible to take other university-level courses, but participation and any assocoated costs must be discussed separately with your guidance counselor. If the school cannot cover the cost of courses outside the cooperation agreement, you can also pay for them yourself.

If you have registered for a course and are unable to attend, please withdraw before the deadline.

Exchange year and studies completed abroad

A checklist for exchange students is available in Wilma.

Students who go on exchange maintain their place of study by applying for a leave of absence for the duration of the exchange. This application must be submitted in Wilma by requesting a temporary suspension of studies.

To have studies completed abroad recognized and credited toward the upper secondary school syllabus, you must provide the school a certificate. It is therefore advisable to keep all the certificates and documents relating to the year of exchange which will be used to gain recognition of your studies. Applications for compensation should be made without delay after your return.

Exchange year studies can be used to replace compulsory and optional courses in the upper secondary school syllabus. If you wish to credit them toward compulsory or national optional courses, you will need curriculum and scope details from the exchange school. Depending on the situation, you may need to have your knowledge verified or your credits supplemented.

Competences may also be acquired outside formal education and training. For example, language skills acquired while living abroad can be credited towards upper secondary school studies.
