TUVA Preparatory Education for Qualification

Preparatory education for qualification is intended for compulsory school-age students and other learners without a secondary education qualification who need preparatory education. The aim is to provide students with the skills to study in qualification-oriented education. TUVA studies combine additional basic education, preparatory education for upper secondary school, and preparatory education for vocational training,

The objectives of the preparatory education for qualification are to:

  • Provide students with the skills to apply for upper secondary school or vocational qualification education
  • Clarify students' plans regarding further studies and career-related wishes and goals
  • Strengthen students' ability to complete the upper secondary school curriculum and the matriculation examination or vocational qualification.

Additionally, the goal of the education is to support students' choices for further studies and careers. During the education, students aim to identify their strengths and interests and build various options for both secondary education and working life.

TUVA Preparatory Education in Pyynikin lukio upper secondary school

At Pyynikin lukio, the purpose of the Preparatory Education for Qualification (TUVA) is to improve students' readiness to apply for upper secondary school. The studies emphasize strengthening Finnish language skills and the study techniques and skills needed in upper secondary school, in addition to basic skills.

In the preparatory education for qualification, students study, in addition to study and career planning skills, the following high school subjects:

  • Mother tongue and literature (S2)
  • Other languages
  • Mathematical and natural sciences
  • Social studies and cultural knowledge
  • Study guidance
  • Optional studies

Optional studies include courses to improve basic education grades and upper secondary school courses according to the student's personal study plan. TUVA education does not directly entitle students to a upper secondary school place; instead, students apply for upper secondary school normally in the following spring's joint application. During the education, it is possible to complete upper secondary school studies that can be credited later.

The education lasts one school year and is organized at Pyynikin lukio. The TUVA education at Pyynikin lukio is organized in cooperation with Tampere Vocational College Tredu.

A student can be admitted to the TUVA group at Pyynikin lukio upper secondary school if they:

  • Are an immigrant or non-native speaker
  • Have completed basic education or an equivalent syllabus in Finland or abroad, or have equivalent knowledge and skills
  • Need to strengthen their Finnish language skills to complete upper secondary school studies
  • Have upper secondary school as their primary choice after preparatory education
  • Have not completed a secondary education qualification or matriculation examination in Finland or an equivalent qualification in another country
