The historical and valuable Pyynikintie 2

The number of upper secondary school students in Tampere is increasing As part of the city’s school network development, Pyynikin lukio upper secondary school will move to its new premises at Pyynikintie 2 in February 2026. From August 2025 onwards, the number of students in our school will grow, and by 2028 we expect to have up to 750 students. The central location is easily accessible by tram, with stops at both Pyynikintori and Metso.

The historic building, known as “Old Tech,” was originally built in 1916 and expanded in 1934 for the Tampere Technical College. It is classified as a nationally significant cultural site. During the 1918 Civil War, it served as the headquarters of the Tampere Red Guard. The building has now been fully renovated, preserving only the original structure and exterior.

Before our school moves in, the premises will serve as temporary facilities for other schools undergoing renovations. Our current building in Rantaperkiö is urgently needed for basic education, as the number of children in Härmälä and Hatanpää is rapidly increasing.

The move to the city centre also supports our specific educational programme in music and musical theatre. Located at Pyynikintie 2, we will be close to the Tampere Conservatory and the Pirkanmaa Music Institute, fostering stronger collaboration.  The new premises have been designed with music and musical theater in mind, featuring group workspaces, music rooms, and a dedicated musical theater classroom. The architect firm, Von Boehm – Renell Oy, focused on school design and worked closely with teachers.

The first floor features a spacious multifunctional common area and the school restaurant. The second floor will accommodate mother tongue, literature, natural sciences, and administrative offices. The student council will have its own meeting room and lounge near the administrative offices. The third floor will accommodate classrooms for languages, arts, and general subjects, many of which can be combined to create exam halls. The fourth floor is dedicated to music with large classrooms and studios.

The building, partly four and partly five storeys high, will also host basic education. Vivi Lönn School’s crafts and home economics classes will be held in the basement, while the first floor will temporarily accommodate an elementary school. The gym is small, so some physical education lessons will take place outdoors or in nearby facilities. The stunning landscapes of Pyynikki and Eteläpuisto will become familiar training grounds, and cooperation with local sports organisations will be essential to organise activities.
