Specific Educational Programme in Music and Musical Theater

In addition to general upper secondary education, Pyynikin lukio Upper Secondary School offers a Specific Educational Programme in Music and Musical Theater in the Pirkanmaa region. Our extensive selection of studies in music, musical theater and music technology allows you to choose the studies that interest you the most. You may focus either on music or musical theater according to your own interests.

Students in music and musical theater have access to several teaching and rehearsal facilities that are very well equipped. In the studio, students can make their own recordings, and the rehearsal room is available for practising also after the school day. During upper secondary school, you will have opportunities to perform in various events such as musicals and concerts.

Through collaboration projects and visits, students become familiar with the work of professionals in the fields of music and theater. Our cooperation partners include Tampere University of Applied Sciences, Tampere University, Pirkanmaa Music Institute, Tampere Conservatoire and Tampereen Työväen Teatteri. The close proximity of Pirkanmaa Music Institute and Tampere Conservatoire makes it easier to combine music studies and upper secondary school studies.

Studying at Pyynikin Lukio provides excellent opportunities and qualifications for pursuing further studies in music and theatre fields after upper secondary school. Starting in fall 2029, students will have the opportunity to include music as one of their matriculation exam subjects.

Studying in the programme

Students in the Specific Educational Programme in Music and Musical Theater complete the national study units MU1 and MU2 as well as at least six two-credit study units in music and musical theater (=12 credits). Of the compulsory study units for all students, MMP1–MMP5 and either MMP6 or MMP7 are completed. In addition to the compulsory study units, a wide range of optional study units is available.

If a student completes, in addition to MU1 and MU2, at least twelve two-credit study units in music or musical theater (24 credits), they are entitled to leave out eight compulsory national two-credit study units (16 credits) from their personal study plan. However, at least half of the compulsory studies in each subject must still be completed. In any subject included in the Matriculation Examination, all compulsory studies in that subject must be completed.

Students applying for the Specific Educational Programme may include young people studying in a music class or music institute during comprehensive school, or otherwise actively involved in music and performance. Musical or performance skills may also have been acquired through optional music or drama studies in lower secondary school.

Applying to the programme

Students for the Specific Educational Programme are selected through a combined score system: in addition to the grade point average of academic subjects in the comprehensive school certificate (0–10), the selection is also based on points received from the aptitude test (0–10).

The language of instruction for the music and musical theater program is Finnish, so all related instructions are available only in Finnish.
