Journal and newspaper collections

You can read journals in the journal reading spaces and on the computers. You can browse the journal collection in the online library from Journals. In addition to physical journals, the library’s journal collection also has e-journals and microfilm journals. 

Magazines

Almost all magazines can be borrowed. In most library branches, the latest issue is available for reading in the library, while older issues can be borrowed. The standard loan period for magazines is two weeks. Magazine issues that have already arrived at the library can be reserved via the PIKI online library.


Magazines are stored at the Main Library Metso. Issues and annual volumes kept in storage are visible in the PIKI online library. For more detailed information, please contact the customer service desk at the Main Library Metso.


The retention periods for magazines vary between local libraries. The magazine issues available at local libraries can be viewed in the PIKI online library. For further information, please contact the libraries directly.

Newspapers and Microfilms

Newspapers are not available for loan. Newspapers are generally kept in libraries for 1–2 months. Local newspapers from the Pirkanmaa region are retained at the Main Library Metso for the current year and the previous year. Some older newspapers have been archived on microfilm up to the end of 2023.

Examples of newspapers available on microfilm include Aamulehti and Helsingin Sanomat. The microfilmed newspaper volumes are located in the microfilm room on the ground floor of the Main Library Metso. Two microfilm scanners are available for customer use. The machines can be used to view both microfilms and microfiche.

The scanners can be reserved via the Netloan reservation system for a maximum of three hours at a time. 

Zines (Small-Press Magazines)

A collection of small-press magazines, also known as zines, is available in the periodicals area of the Main Library Metso. All zines can be borrowed, and the loan period is two weeks. Zines can be donated to the collection by bringing them to the customer service desk of the Music Department at the Main Library Metso.

E-publications

PressReader is an electronic publication service that provides access to digital copies of publications from all over the world. The publications are available for reading as soon as they are published and are stored in the archive for 60 days. The service can be accessed on the library’s customer computers. Remote access:  You can also download publications on your own device using the library’s wireless network.
