ITS World Congress is one of the world's largest events for intelligent transport and mobility. The Hall of Fame Award is given to organisations that have demonstrated exceptional leadership, impact and innovation in the field of intelligent transport and sustainable urban mobility. Tampere won in the local government category.

Tampere's Intelligent Transport Systems strategy has included piloting automated transport, using traffic data and resident-centred digital services.

- It is a great achievement for Tampere's sustainable urban mobility and intelligent transport to be recognised at the ITS World Congress. In Tampere, smart mobility is developed in close cooperation with universities, companies, city representatives and networks both in Finland and internationally. This award is another proof that our cooperation model works, says Ilkka Porttikivi, Deputy Mayor of the City of Tampere.

Previous recipients of the Hall of Fame Award in the local government category include Grand Lyon from France, Transport for London from the UK, AustriaTech from Austria, the Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications and the City of Copenhagen from Denmark.

The award is the result of years of systematic development of intelligent transport

Tampere has been working systematically on smart and sustainable transport for a long time. Last year's Tampere Sustainable and Digital Transport System 2030 plan sets out guidelines for future development.

- Tampere has been working on smart transport in the long term, and the city is committed to building a smart and sustainable transport system for the future together with its networks, says Mika Kulmala, Project Manager of the City of Tampere.

Years of development work and the resulting plan for the future were part of Tampere's ITS World Congress win.

- We are now taking forward practical projects that use digital solutions to promote safer and more sustainable mobility, for example by using traffic data and developing automated public transport. Digitalisation allows us to use what we already have, rather than new investments, to improve mobility for all, says Kulmala.
