Superbus planning moves forward - the Committee decides on the level of service costs

On 23 April 2025, Tampere City Regional Public Transport Committee will decide on a cost impact estimate for the super bus service as a basis for further planning.

The aim is to improve public transport services, particularly in areas where no tramway has been built or is planned. According to the plans, the super bus service would start in summer 2027 on line 8 Annala - Kaukajärvi - Keskustori - Tesoma - Haukiluoma, operated by Tampere City Transport Ltd. Later, the service would be extended to line 7 Linnainmaa - Janka - Hakametsä - Keskustori - Rahola - Kalkku - Tesoma.

Investments in electric buses and a depot

The superbus service will require investment in around 50 electric buses and new depot facilities. The Nekala depot will be replaced by a new depot suitable for electric transport.

-The Nekala depot has come to the end of its life. The new depot should be built to meet the needs of electric transport, which requires more charging points. At the same time, it is good to consider the best location for the superbuses, so that transfers from the depot to the final stops on the line are as short as possible, says Juha-Pekka Häyrynen, Nysse's planning manager.

This is how the costs have been calculated

The costs of purchasing, operating and financing the buses have been estimated on the basis of market dialogues conducted by Tampere City Transport Ltd. The aim is to conclude a contract for 15 years.

The super bus service is a high-quality bus service that will increase passenger capacity by 20%. It is proposed that the cost of running the service will be 10% higher than the current cost of running lines 7 and 8. The cost per passenger is about 20% lower than for tram services and more than 5% lower than for other bus services.

-The superbus service is a cost-effective way to meet the growth in public transport travel. It also complements tram and commuter rail services, developing the city in a balanced way outside the rail network," says Mika Periviita, Director of Nysse.

Tampere City Transport Ltd s is an in-house company owned by the City of Tampere. It is responsible for about a third of the bus services in Tampere with about 300 employees.
