Applying for Basic Education in Theater Arts

The application period for new students in basic education in theater arts is from May 1, 2025 to May 31, 2025. Applications are made according to the age group of the learner. The studies are conducted in Finnish. Students are admitted to the studies based on the order of application for available student places. Information about the student place and group will be sent to the email provided during the application process in June.

Applying for Basic Education in Literary Arts

The application period for the literary arts school at The Adult Education Centre of the Tampere Region is from May 1 to May 31, 2025. Applications are made by filling out a form that includes the learner's and guardian's information, as well as a free-form text sample. The studies are intended for those who speak Finnish as their mother tongue or at a native level. Information about the possible admission will be sent by email to the guardian's address in June. A supplementary application will be organized in August if necessary.

Applying for Basic Education in Craft Arts for Adults

The application period for basic education in craft arts for adults is from May 1 to August 17, 2025. Students are admitted to the studies based on the order of application. The studies are conducted in Finnish. You can apply for basic studies if you are interested in handicrafts and developing your own expression. You can apply for advanced studies if you have completed the basic studies in the arts or have equivalent knowledge and skills.

Basic education in the arts is goal-oriented education progressing from one level to another, which provides the pupils with the skills to express themselves and also apply for vocational and higher education in the field. The activities are based on the Basic Art Education Act.

The instruction provides pupils with the ability to express themselves visually. The instruction develops imagination and a sense of nuances. In addition, the instruction develops creative problem-solving capacity and ecological and aesthetic attitudes. The aim of studies is to create long-term study motivation and a hobby, and it also provides a good basis for vocational studies in visual arts.

Visual arts

Basic education in visual arts is arranged by Sara Hildén Academy which is part of Tampere Adult Education Centre, and operated by the City of Tampere.

Sara Hildén Academy's main task is to provide basic education in visual arts for children and young people in accordance with the extended syllabus. We also offer adults basic art education in accordance with the extended syllabus.

Literary art

Basic education in the field of literary arts is art education based on the curriculum given to children and young people in literary arts groups according to the general syllabus for children and young people aged 8–18. The teaching, progressing from one level to another, covers a variety of different forms of mastery of words, from narrative to extensive texts. The most important objective of literary art education is to encourage the pupil to use their imagination and experiment with the means of linguistic expression.

For adults, instruction in literary art is provided by the Viita Academy, a three-year school for authors.

The Viita Academy was established in 1989 in cooperation between the Tampere Adult Education Centre, Pirkkala writers’ association, the City of Tampere cultural services, the City Library, the Department of Literature and the Arts of the University of Tampere and mother tongue teachers of Pirkanmaa.

The application period for the three-year school of writers is in the summer.

Theater art

It is possible to participate in basic education in theater art for children and young people at the Tampere Adult Education Centre according to the general syllabus.

Basic education in theater is art education based on the curriculum. It supports the development of the pupils’ personality and provides them with the knowledge and skills of self-expression through theater art. The task of basic education in theatre art is to strengthen the pupil’s active agency and understanding of theater art.

Basic education in accordance with the general syllabus in theater is provided at the adult education centre to children and young people aged 9–17. The instruction progresses from one level to another, and during it the pupils familiarise themselves with theatre art in a versatile manner. The groups will always continue from previous periods, but new students will be admitted to available places.

Handicrafts

Basic education in crafts is provided to adults at the Tampere Adult Education Centre in Ylöjärvi in accordance with the extended syllabus. The studies are divided into three years of basic studies and three years of advanced studies. The studies include both contact teaching and independent studies.

Basic education in the arts provides an opportunity for goal-oriented studies in crafts under the guidance of experts. The aim is to develop the student’s expressive capabilities and the management of materials and techniques. The studies can also be used, for example, as continuing vocational education and training that supports work or in vocational studies.
