City of Tampere Literary Prize

Since 1944, the budget of the City of Tampere has included an appropriation for rewarding creative literary work.

A committee appointed by the City Board selects the award winners from among literary pieces published each year in accordance with the following guidelines: The City of Tampere Literary Prize (formerly the prize for creative writing) is awarded for literary works or other creative writing pieces that are either published by Tampere-based authors or themed around the City of Tampere.

Tampere-based authors, as referred to above, mean writers who are currently living in Tampere or in the Tampere region, or who were born in Tampere but are currently living elsewhere. The award committee will assess whether or not an author is to be deemed Tampere-based.

The prize will not be awarded to the same author for two consecutive years.

The prize is awarded without competition at the discretion of the award committee for creative writing. If possible, a portion of the award appropriations must be used to reward high-quality youth and children's literary works.

The award committee must familiarise itself sufficiently with the relevant literary sector.
