What kind of park is it?

Eteläpuisto consists of a historic urban park on the upper level, a waterfront park on the lower level and a slope area in between. On the western side of the upper level are the Koulukatu field and an outdoor gym. The lawn areas to the south of the field, with their miniature golf courses, are also part of the Eteläpuisto Park. A skateboard ramp is located under the Ratina Bridge (Kaarikoirat ry).

Memorials

There are two memorials in Eteläpuisto: the Monument of Cooperation, which was erected in 1950 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first Finnish cooperative movement founded in Tampere in 1900, and the memorial to Kauppaneuvos Fabian Klingendahl.

The memorial to Fabian Klingendahl was placed in Eteläpuisto opposite the south gate of the Klingendahl factory in 1972. The statue was created by artist Yrjö Liipola.

Development of the Eteläpuisto Park

Eteläpuisto will be developed as a green and recreational area for all citizens. The objectives are to develop biodiversity, recreation, walkable city and identity of the area, to enhance the cultural heritage and landscape values of the area, and to improve accessibility to the beach. The local detailed plan will ensure that the criteria for a National Urban Park are met in the EteläpuistoPark.

Nice to know

In January 1941, the city opened a new hockey rink on the gravel field in Eteläpuisto, also known as the Mummukoppa field. The area had a home for elderly women, De Gamlas Hem, which was called Muorikoti (Grandma's house) in Finnish. Over time, as Tampere locals tended to pronounce the letter D as R: people would agree to meet at “Mummukori” (“Grandma’s basket”), and the basket (kori) then became koppa in the Tampere dialect.
