Museum kits bring joy to seniors' daily lives
Shall we explore the contents of a 1960s woman's handbag, sip coffee from vintage Arabia cups, or listen to the sounds of nature and everyday chores? This is how a cultural session for seniors might begin, using a borrowed museum kit. The museum kit lending service has been part of the Konkarit program since 2012.
There are 17 different themed kits available. The Sound Museum and nature-themed kits include archival sounds and photographs, while object kits feature tangible items related to construction, textiles, childhood, coffee moments, and the contents of a woman’s handbag. A popular art-themed kit includes ink crayons and brushes for organizing an art session.
Museum kits are borrowed over 70 times a year, reaching more than 2,700 older adults in various service units and meeting places. Feedback from staff highlights the kits’ engaging nature, ease of use, and the joy and variety they bring to residents’ and visitors’ lives.

The Nature Session kit was versatile and useful for both group and individual activities. Beautiful images and sounds, and even the wooden casing of the device delighted participants.
The Builder’s Kit was fun and effective, especially in evoking memories among men.
The Childhood and Childcare kit worked well! It sparked discussions and memories. The old photos were lovely, and the Pipsa doll made some residents light up with joy.
Secrets of the Handbag was a delightful kit with scents that brought back memories of youth dances and outings. Everything essential was found in the handbag. We also discussed fashion and how stylish people used to be.
The Changing Professions photo kit encouraged people to reminisce about their own careers. Some cards even featured familiar places in Tampere. Easy to use even for short sessions.
Using the Art Supply Kit, it was fascinating to see what each person created once they had the colors in hand. Some drew pictures, others began writing. We discussed the themes. The art cards were a wonderful point of interest, and many enjoyed and recognized the artworks.
Konkarit program offers activities also for groups
In addition to lending and developing museum kits, the Konkarit program includes group activities tailored for older adults. In 2025, these have included Konkarimuskari music sessions, Tatamuri® art groups, and museum moments at day centers and community hubs.
