What kind of park is it?
K. J. Gauffin Park is a new park under construction in the Hatanpää district, between the Arboretum and Vihilahdenkuja. The park consists of a series of sub-parks between north-south oriented paths, accentuated by rows of trees. Now the park includes a barbecue area and a grassy area for sitting and playing. Later on, there will be an area for playing and a viewpoint, as well as a climbing tunnel. The park also includes an allotment plot. In the west, just before the Arboretum, the area consists of tree species dating from the time when the city’s former nursery was in operation.
A master plan for the park was prepared based on the local detailed plan approved in 2019.
What does the park look like?
The story of the park
K. J. Gauffin Park is part of the Hatanpään Kartanopuisto Park and Hatanpää Arboretum, a large green area on the shores of Lake Pyhäjärvi. The area is a former city nursery area, from which the various tree species are remnants of. The park is named after Karl Johan Gauffin, who was the city's gardener from 1874 to 1897. The post of city gardener was one of the first in Finland. The birth of the City of Tampere's parks and gardens can be officially attributed to Gauffin's appointment. His most significant work is considered to be the renewal of the park area of Hatanpää Mansion.
