Animal welfare notifications

When submitting an animal welfare notification, the exact address of the establishment where the animals are kept and the name of the owner of the animals must be determined in advance. Outside office hours, in case of animal welfare emergencies, contact the police or, secondarily, emergency services for large animals.

Animal welfare matters are regionally divided between veterinary inspectors. However, in urgent animal welfare cases, you can contact any of our veterinary inspectors. In other matters, such as animal disease and by-product control, please contact us and we will refer the matter to the correct person.

Submit an animal welfare notification using the form below when the animal or animals in question are located in Tampere, Akaa, Juupajoki, Kangasala, Orivesi, Pälkäne, Urjala or Valkeakoski.

Veterinary inspectors

Veterinary inspectors are responsible for:

  • animal welfare control
  • animal disease control
  • monitoring the identification and registration of animals;
  • and control of the use of animal by-products.

Veterinary inspectors also manage the import and export of animals as part of animal disease control.  These tasks also include Traces inspections of horses.

Import and export systems have changed.  For more information and instructions on registration, see the Finnish Food Authority’s website:

Contact us as soon as possible regarding the export of animals. Traces inspections are mainly carried out by veterinary inspector Jyrki Haapasalmi.

Veterinary inspectors do not handle cases where keeping animals or other animal-related activities cause harm to other persons, for example, through noise. If keeping animals causes clear health hazards, you can contact the local health inspector. If an animal poses an immediate risk to humans, contact the police.

Veterinary inspectors do not handle disputes related to trade in animals or similar matters. In such cases, you should primarily contact the party causing the harm/the other party and clarify the matter with them. In disputes related to animal trade, you can contact the Consumer Ombudsman.
