Sport in which everyone has his own support car: cycling time trial

On the day two at the European Youth Olympic Festival Tampere (EYOF) Tuesday the 21st July 2009 boys 7,1 k cycling time trial took place. Each of 99 participants from 38 countries had their own support car.

The cultural differences were to be seen very clearly in support and cheering action. The Turkish cyclist had their countrymen from different sports to support them at the start point. Turkish and Italians got strict orders and loud cheering from their support cars. Serbs and Cypriots had their supporters half hanging out of the support cars and drivers excelling right behind the cyclists. The Estonians only honked instead and the Finnish cyclists were allowed to drive trusting their own will power “sisu”.

German Felix Donath was happy and he waited for a result as good as possible. His countryman Ruben Zepunkte popped every now and again to update the results. The 16 years old Felix started cycling at the age of ten encouraged by his dads cycling career. When younger Felix did cross country skiing. However he was too heavy and big to carry on that sport.

Felix came sixth (time 10:02:74) right after Rubin who came fifth (time 09:59:62)

From the three Finns Aku Silvenius was the quickest (time 10:43:60). He came 60th. Roope Numi was 85th (time 11:00:85). Olli Teivaala was 87th (time 11:08:93).

The winner of the even A-finals was English Joshua Papworth (time 47:34). The second place went to English Jonathan Dibben, at the same time. The third was Czech Ondrej Rybin, again with the same time. Few bits of information whose those who do not know criterium: The criterium was 34 k (20 laps, circuit length 1,7). The biggest gear of each bike was tested before the game by using metal trails placed on the ground. The time of first cyclist of each group grossing the finishing line is noted and then the placing is made in the order of crossing the finishing line. In other words, many cyclists may have the same time. Text and photo Christina Toimela
