Comprehensive schools of grades 1-6 operate in Tampere at 23 different locations. There are 8 schools for grades 7-9 and 8 schools for grades 1-9, i.e. complete comprehensive education.
In addition to the schools maintained by the city, comprehensive education is also provided by Normaalikoulu, which is a state-maintained school for teacher training. There are also three privately-run comprehensive schools: Tampere Rudolf Steiner school, The Swedish Comprehensive School (Svenska Samskolan) and Tampere Christian School in Aitolahti.
