Let's join forces and clean up the City

It's almost time for the traditional Whole City's Clean-up event of the City of Tampere! Gather a group of volunteers and join us in tidying up the City.

This year's Whole City's Clean-up event will be held 4 May. Gather a cleaning team and help clean up the city. Your team can consist of friends, family members, colleagues or members of a residents' association, for example. Everyone is welcome to join! Registration is open until 19 April.

During registration, the teams will have the chance to define the area that they wish to clean. Cleaning will only involve picking up litter thrown away by people in the City's public areas. Public areas include e.g. cycling routes, parks, kerbsides and other public places. Pirkanmaan Jätehuolto will deliver waste bins and rubbish bags to the registered areas on the day of the event.

You can also come up with ideas for side events, such as coffee breaks for cleaners or yard sales, or challenge another association or group of volunteers to compete in which team picks up the most litter.

On the day of the event, the teams can start cleaning whenever they're ready. The event will end by 14:00 at the latest.

After the event, you can respond to a short feedback survey if you wish. All those who submit a feedback form will have the chance to win one of the ten EUR 20 gift cards for the Pyynikki Coffee Shop. The winners of the gift cards will be drawn.

You can still join on the day of the event

Towards the end of April, the event website will be updated with a map of the meeting places for the registered teams. If you decide to take part in the volunteer work on the day of the event, you can simply join a registered team.

This year, the Whole City's Clean-up event will have a pop-up stall in the lobby of the Metso library for those who wish to join the event on short notice. The stall will provide you with a trash bag and instructions on where to take it after cleaning. The Metso Pop Up stall is part of the Metso goes GREEN event.

The Whole City's Clean-up event is also part of the Miljoona roskapussia (One million trash bags) campaign organised by YLE. All trash bags collected during the clean-up event will be reported to the campaign website.

The Whole City's Clean-up event is organised by the City of Tampere and Tampereen Infra in collaboration with Pirkanmaan Jätehuolto and Ekokumppanit.

Whole City's Clean-up is gaining popularity

Last year, approximately 1,200 people participated in the event, more than doubling the number of participants from 2022. Litter was picked up in 54 areas in a total of 75 different points. A total of approximately 2.86 tonnes of litter was collected.

Environmental Advisor Tiina Kuusipalo says that the clean-up event has been gaining popularity.

‒ More and more people have joined in to do good for the environment.

Kuusipalo says that one of the reasons for the increase in popularity is that many people want to do tangible things for the benefit of the environment. The communal nature of the event also attracts people.

‒ The event is a good place to meet new people and get to know your neighbours.

The event has also been developed and innovated further.

‒ Perhaps we have also developed as organisers and in developing the volunteering concept in a direction that's made participation easy. This year, for example, in connection with the Metso Goes Green event, the lobby of the Metso library will host a pop-up stall for the Whole City's Clean-up event. The personnel at the stall will provide volunteers with trash bags and instructions, Kuusipalo explains.
