Tampereen seudun työväenopisto is an education centre offering courses for both children and adults. It was established in 1899, and has since achieved great popularity among the citizens of Tampere. The academic year is divided into two terms: the autumn term begins in September and the spring term ends in April.

Työväenopisto arranges courses, lectures and study circles in many fields. Human and social science subjects include philosophy, culture and nature; personal development and healthy living consists of subjects such as psychology, healthcare, physical exercise and dance; practical skills are taught in information technology, video techniques, handicrafts, woodwork; teaching in arts is offered in drama, creative writing, music and visual arts. Languages are also well represented: courses in 20 languages are offered at different levels. There are courses for children and even babies in physical exercise, art and music.

You can join many of the courses even if your Finnish skills are not very good or non-existent - you can learn Finnish while learning practical skills by doing (for example handicrafts, arts, cooking or baby music play groups). There are also special courses for immigrants where you can learn Finnish, English and theatre. Also, there are some courses where English is used as a working language.
Many of the courses are in the evenings but some groups also meet in the mornings or in the afternoons. Advance enrolment through the Internet or by phone is required for some of the courses. In addition to Sampola and Koulutuskeskus Valo in Ylöjärvi, courses are also held in many other locations in Tampere and Ylöjärvi.

You can find information on the courses in the Tampereen seudun työväenopisto programme that comes out twice a year (in August and in December), as well as by visiting www.tampere.fi/tyovaenopisto
