During the school year 2019–2020 all children born in 2013 will participate in preschool education. Preschool education will be provided mainly during term time. Vacation times follow the semester of basic education. During these times day care and morning and afternoon activities are arranged.
Enrolment was carried out in the internet with an electronic form during 7.–21.1.2019.

The custodians of pre-school children in Tampere will no longer enrol their children in school. Schools will automatically get the information of the upcoming first graders from Helmi -student administration software.
Pupils who are either moving to Tampere or are in pre-school, which does not use Helmi -student administration software, will enrol in school in the internet with an electronic form.
Families will be notified about school placement and visiting day by the end of March 2018.
The choice of school is assigned predominantly according to the location of the pupil’s home address. The criteria that affect the choice of school a pupil is assigned to include
- the distance between home and school,
- the traffic (conditions) in the area,
- the limitations of the school building and
- the pupil's potential need for special support.
The school principals decide on the placement of the pupils in schools according to the aforementioned criteria. In addition, the city aims at starting groups of equal size in basic education.
Tampere basic education also provides an opportunity for pupils to study in English, French or German. Pupils will be chosen in CLIL education through an entrance exam, which will be organized in February. More details:

Children who live in one of the municipalities in the Tampere city region (Tampere, Kangasala, Orivesi, Ylöjärvi, Lempäälä, Pirkkala, Nokia) and speak English as their mother tongue or otherwise have sufficient knowledge of English can be admitted as students into the Finnish International School of Tampere.

Pupils can choose another school if a certain subject or focus area is not provided in the school assigned to the pupil. A change of school is also possible on other grounds if there are places available in that school.
Maximum class sizes have been confirmed for each school in grades 7–9, and have also been confirmed in grades 1–6 for teaching groups in comprehensive school. Teaching groups for different subjects are formed on the basis of the total number of pupils in the school and the capacity of classrooms.
Pupils in grades 1-6 and 7-9 who reside in Tampere have priority for a study place in a school assigned by the City. If there are places available in the school, even pupils outside the catchment area can be enrolled in that school. More information of choosing another school is provided by principals.
Pupils moving to Tampere from other locations enrol in the school of their catchment area in the internet with an electronic form.
Pupils who reside in Tampere have priority in obtaining a place in city-maintained schools, but pupils residing in other municipalities can also apply to schools in Tampere. For pupils residing in other municipalities, decisions on admission to a school are made by the principal.
The application process for morning and afternoon activities for 1st and 2nd –graders for the school year 2018–2019 begins in April 2018. When the application period starts, families will be notified by a press release and a notice on Tampere basic education web site.
