Advance voting for county elections begins on 12 January 2022
In the January county elections, a county council will be elected for Pirkanmaa, which will also decide on the organisation of social and health services and rescue services in Tampere. The advance voting period for the county elections is from 12 to 18 January 2022. The actual election day is Sunday, 23 January 2022.
In Tampere, advance votes can be cast in shopping centres, local markets, libraries and educational institutions throughout the city. Voting is also possible in Tampere Ice Arena in Hakametsä, in the central office building and in Monitoimitalo 13.
– A new advance polling station is located at the ice arena, where voting is arranged particularly spaciously in the hallway of the arena. The polling station is also easy to access: you can get right next to the entrance by car, for example, says lawyer Katja Korhonen, Secretary of the Central Election Committee.
People placed in isolation or quarantine may, under certain conditions, vote in their home or, on election day, outside the polling station.
Advance polling stations in Tampere traditionally have long opening hours, which means that voting is also possible outside of peak hours.
The elections will again be conducted with the arrangements required by the epidemic situation.
– In Tampere, election officials wear face masks and use hand sanitiser. The surfaces are cleaned regularly. Plexiglasses are placed between the voters and the election officials at the advance polling stations, says Katja Korhonen.
– Sufficient distances are taken into account in the placement of and the queuing arrangements at the polling stations. Voters are offered a face mask if they don’t have one. Hand sanitiser is also available.
Finnish citizens who reach the age of 18 years on election day at the latest and whose municipality of residence belongs to the wellbeing services county of Pirkanmaa have the right to vote in the county elections. In addition, the citizens of other EU countries, Iceland and Norway whose municipality of residence belongs to the wellbeing services county are entitled to vote. Other foreign nationals are entitled to vote if they have had their municipality of residence in Pirkanmaa for an uninterrupted period of at least two years.
The county elections are about important matters that concern everyone’s everyday life. The councillors elected in the county elections will decide on the organisation of local services in the wellbeing services counties from the beginning of 2023. The council will also be responsible for the operations and economy of the wellbeing services county.
In Pirkanmaa, 79 councillors will be elected to the county council. The county council will begin its work on 1 March 2022.
Until now, municipalities have been responsible for the organisation of social and health services and rescue services in Finland.
