Libraries to open on 1 June

Published 29.5.2020 17.48

The branches of the Tampere City Library will open on 1 June, with the exception of Koukkuniemi Library. Self-service opening hours will not be used for now.

The libraries will be open from 1 June in accordance with the Government’s guidelines. All Tampere City Library branches, except for Koukkuniemi Library, will be open from 1 June in accordance with summer opening hours. The self-service opening hours of self-service libraries (Messukylä, Koivistonkylä, Peltolammi, Kämmenniemi and Terälahti) will not be available for the time being, as the Regional State Administrative Agency has instructed that the use of library facilities must be continuously monitored for the library to be allowed to be open. This is not possible in self-service libraries with no staff present.

“Many people have been eagerly waiting to visit a library again, so we will offer as many of the services as we can in this situation. The safety of our customers and staff has been our number one priority during the preparations: we have installed protective screens at the counters, spaced the furniture more widely and paid special attention to cleaning and safe distances. Picking up reserved items has been possible in larger libraries from May, and the libraries have been quiet and safe to visit," says Pirkko Lindberg, the City of Tampere’s Director of Library and Adult Education Services.

Mobile libraries will also start running again from the beginning of June, and the mobile libraries’ usual summer break will not take place this summer. A maximum of two customers are allowed to use the mobile library at the same time.

Small changes to services

Most of the library services will be available as normal after the reopening of the libraries. However, some small changes have been made to guarantee safe and smooth use of the libraries.

Game rooms, tablet lending, book recycling shelves and toys are not available for now. The use times for the libraries’ computers have been changed, and customers can now reserve a computer for a maximum of one hour. The change was made to ensure that as many people as possible will be able to use the computers after the long break. In addition, fewer computers than usual will be available due to the need to maintain safe distances. Customers are asked to reserve a computer in advance online via the Computer Reservation System or by calling the library.

The libraries’ reservable lecture halls, working spaces and music rooms will be available from 1 June. The person who reserved the space will be responsible for its use. From the beginning of June, events of over 50 people will be banned in accordance with the Government’s guidelines.

Due to ongoing renovations, Makerspace Tekomo and the Tietotori of Sampola Library will not be opened until Monday, 15 June.

For now, cash payments will not be accepted at libraries. Library charges can be paid by card or as online payments in the PIKI online services of the libraries.

Customers are asked to take care of their hand hygiene and maintain a safe distance from others when visiting the library. Being as quick as possible when using the library is recommended. Customers must not come to the library while ill. The libraries now have hand sanitiser and disinfectant wipes for disinfecting surfaces such as computer keyboards.

You can find out more about the measures taken at the libraries directly from the libraries or via the chat service of the PIKI online services of the libraries.
