Tampere offers an application to support Finnish learners

Employment services at the City of Tampere will give a three-month WordDive license to 150 immigrants to support their learning of the Finnish language.

The app is designed for independent language learning, and the Smart Tampere programme will provide it to 150 immigrants who use the city’s employment services. The majority of the customers selected for the WordDive pilot are waiting to be admitted to contact teaching in Finnish. At the moment, the typical waiting time for contact teaching in integration studies is a few months.

The aim of the WordDive pilot is to find out if immigrants could learn Finnish faster with the help of the application.

- We want to find out if the customers who studied Finnish independently with the app could, for instance, start their studies at the basic level instead of the introductory course, says Minna Vierula, Project Manager.

The project can also help to determine the most effective time for including independent language learning into the integration process.

Integration customers can use the app on a computer, smartphone or tablet. It contains gamified exercises on topics such as vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar. The app is driven by an AI function that selects the most appropriate exercises for the user.

The employment services will use the application until the end of the year. The three-month online course has been offered to integration customers free of charge since the start of April.

- The first experiences with the application were promising, and the results reveal that the app motivates customers to study Finnish, Minna Vierula says.

Smart Tampere is a strategic programme by the City of Tampere that drives digitalization and sustainability.
