Preschool education is a child's learning, inclusion, development and growth-oriented activity designed to strengthen child's self-esteem, provide positive learning experiences and opportunities for diverse interaction with other children of the same age.
Preschool education is organized by the municipal authority is intended for all children under school age one year before basic education. Preschool education is mandatory (determined by the law Perusopetuslaki 26 a §).
The season of preschool education starts in the middle of August and lasts until the end of May and includes at least 700 lessons (4 h/day). Preschool education is free of charge. Day care services or morning and afternoon activities in addition to preschool hours are chargeable. The child’s need for day care should also be indicated during the enrolment.
During the school year 2018–2019 all children born in 2012 will participate in preschool education.
Preschool education is provided in communal schools and day care centres as well as in some private day care centres and schools.
Enrolment will be carried out in the internet with an electronic form during 8.–23.1.2018.

Preschool education will be provided from 9 August 2018 until the end of May 2018 mainly during term time. Vacation times follow the semester of basic education. During these times day care and morning and afternoon activities are arranged.
Preschool education is based on the principles laid out by the Ministry of Education. The same principles that are the basis of designing a common educational preschool programme for the entire municipality are also the basis of day care centres’ own activity plans. Preschool have intensive cooperation with the first and second grades.
