Merry Christmas to all Tampere residents!

In her Christmas greeting, Mayor Anna-Kaisa Ikonen looks back on the past year and reflects on the future.

The year 2022 has been heavy in many ways due to the coronavirus pandemic, the war of aggression initiated by Russia, and the energy shortage and the increased prices caused by it. The events of the past year have caused concern among many Tampere residents.

Fortunately, the year also has many moments of joy and success such as the World Cup festival at the Central Square and Hakametsä. They are nice memories. The World Cup was wonderful, and all city residents contributed to its success. This year has been a good reminder of how the strength of Tampere has always been good, constructive and inspiring co-operation between different people.

Even in difficult times, we should believe in the future and boldly develop our city together. Even though it’s sometimes difficult, the future holds good things, joy and light.

Tampere is a city where everyone can live a life of their own. On Christmas, too. One likes peace, the other one hustle and bustle. The most important thing is that you can build Christmas to your liking.

Unfortunately, Christmas can also be a time of loneliness. Let's do our best together to have less of it. If we can't be close, we can call, send a message or perhaps bring a good feeling to someone we don't know with a small, friendly gesture or greeting.

I wish everyone a warm Christmas and a hopeful and happy New Year!

Mayor Anna-Kaisa Ikonen
