Tilda Rose creates new fairy-tale worlds as the resident guest of the Moomin Museum

The Moomin Museum takes pleasure in hosting the Finnish-American illustrator Tilda Rose as its resident guest artist in Tampere this November. During her residency, Rose will work in the Moomin Museum’s Studio and reside on the grounds of Haihara Manor. Now organised for the second time, the residency is intended for professional illustrators and organised jointly by the Moomin Museum and the Finnish Illustration Association.

Tilda Rose is a Helsinki-based, 26-year-old illustrator who was selected through an open call. She graduated as an illustrator from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia in 2019. Her illustrations have featured in American magazines such as the Wall Street Journal.

Tilda uses traditional techniques such as acrylic paint and coloured pencil in her illustrations. She takes inspiration from both new and old children’s books, the history of American illustration, and all kinds of crafts from crochet to carving. She is forever in search of new colour combinations, stories and characters that take her new adventures to unknown frontiers.

During her residency, Rose will draw inspiration from Tove Jansson, who was herself was influenced by other illustrators, as shown by the Tove’s Bookshelf exhibition currently on display in the Moomin Museum Observatory. Tilda will devote her residency to working on sketches for a children’s book and projects for various clients. The public can watch her work and join in themselves at the Moomin Museum Studio. Tilda will create a new fairy-tale world both in her sketchbook and on the wall of the Studio together with museum visitors.

Tilda Rose’s Sketchbook and Fairyland workshops is open in the Moomin Museum Studio from noon to 4 pm on Tuesdays on November 8, 15, 22 and 29 and on Saturdays on November 5, 19, and 26.

Tilda’s workshop is open from 10 am to 5 pm on Children’s Saturday, November 12.

The Moomin Museum Residency is organised together with the Finnish Illustration Association and the City of Tampere Urban Culture Unit. The artist-in-residence is accommodated at the Haihara Art Centre and receives a monthly grant of 2,000 euros awarded by the Finnish Illustration Association. The grant is funded through copyright remunerations collected by Kopiosto.
