The City of Tampere upper secondary schools will have 1,245 open student places next spring

In the joint application process in spring 2023, a total of 1,245 students may be admitted to upper secondary schools in the City of Tampere. On 19 October 2022, the Committee for Competence and Economic Development decided to keep the number of student places the same as in last spring. The city’s upper secondary schools will not introduce a minimum acceptable point average limit as a condition for student admission.

It was proposed to the Committee for Competence and Economic Development that a minimum acceptable point average limit of 7.0 be introduced in the city's upper secondary schools from 2023 onwards. The Committee voted (7 to 4) to approve the amendment proposal made during the proceedings. As a result, a minimum acceptable point average limit will not be adopted in the city's upper secondary schools.

The purpose of limiting the minimum acceptable point average was to ensure that the applicant has sufficient skills to complete all studies included in upper secondary education.

According to the proposal, it would be appropriate to set a point average limit, as the number of student places has been increased in 2022. In 2022, a minimum acceptable point average limit had not been defined for upper secondary schools in the City of Tampere.

Number of student places in the joint application process at the same level as in 2022

The City of Tampere significantly increased the number of new student places in its upper secondary schools in the joint application process of spring 2022, as due to the large number of applicants, the point average required for admission had already risen to a high level. In spring 2022, there were 1,326 primary applicants (1.07 applicants per student place).

The Committee for Competence and Economic Development has now decided that the number of student places in upper secondary schools in the city in 2023 should also be kept the same as in 2022, except for minor school-specific adjustments.

The decision takes into consideration the high fill rate of upper secondary school places in the City of Tampere in autumn 2022 and the greater number of 16-year-olds in 2023. In 2023, the size of the age group graduating from comprehensive school will grow in Tampere by around 40 pupils compared to last spring.

In autumn 2022, a total of 1,214 young people started studying in the city's upper secondary schools, and the fill rate for the first year was 97.5 per cent.

The City of Tampere upper secondary schools include Hatanpää Upper Secondary School, Sampo Upper Secondary School, Tammerkoski Upper Secondary School, Tampere Upper Secondary School for Adults, Tampere Classical Upper Secondary School, Tampereen lyseon lukio High School and Tampere High School of Technology.
