Competitors get to design a housing area of over 3,000 residents on the shores of Lake Pyhäjärvi, as well as a leisure time environment for the locals and tourists. With a population of roughly 370,000, the sustainably growing Tampere is the largest inland city in the Nordic Countries and, together with the neighbouring municipalities, forms the second-largest urban area in Finland.

<![CDATA[Business generated out of paper mill sludge in Hiedanranta]]> https://www.tampere.fi/en/city-of-tampere/info/current-issues/2018/11/30112018_1.html In 2014, the City of Tampere purchased some of the lands and waters previously used by the forest industry in order to build the future city district of Hiedanranta. The purchased cove in Näsijärvi came with an enormous mass of wood-derived waste materials, also known as paper mill sludge or “zero fibre”. Now, Hiedanranta is serving as a development platform for projects aiming to find use for paper mill sludge that would be financially sensible and clean up the water areas.

<![CDATA[Tampere’s Hiedanranta to be the first in Finland to produce carbon-negative district heating]]> https://www.tampere.fi/en/city-of-tampere/info/current-issues/2018/10/23102018_1.html The commercial production of carbon-negative district heating has begun in Hiedanranta, Tampere. This is the first time carbon-negative district heating is being produced commercially in Finland. Hiedanranta will act as a development platform in a project where Carbofex Oy will produce district heating alongside biochar, its main product. The district heating will be bought by Tampereen Sähkölaitos Oy, which will distribute it to its own customers via its district heating network. The Hiedanranta Development Project has assisted the cooperation efforts and will become the first customer of the carbon-negative district heating production.

<![CDATA[The structural plan for the new Hiedanranta district has been approved – tramway to be built in two phases]]> https://www.tampere.fi/en/city-of-tampere/info/current-issues/2017/12/28122017_1.html Policies on the further development of the new Hiedanranta district were drawn on 18 December 2017, as the City Board approved the structural plan to be used as the basis of the planning of the area. Hiedanranta’s new centre will be built next to the old factory. The structural plan drawing the initial plans for land use in the area has the tramway running through the old factory complex.
